Paul Walker and Roger Rodas Porsche crash parts thieves face jail

A makeshift memorial had been created near the site of the crash several days following the deaths of Walker and Rodas.

TWO MEN PLEAD NO CONTEST TO CHARGES AFTER GRABBING PARTS FROM FLATBED TRUCK

Two men charged with stealing pieces of the wreckage from Paul Walker and Roger Rodas' Porsche Carrera GT now face up to six months in jail, the Los Angeles Times reports. Anthony Edward Janow, 26, and James Brooks Witty, 18, were arrested late last year in the days following the crash when the police identified them as the individuals seen taking parts from a flatbed truck that was transporting the wrecked Carrera GT after crime scene investigators had finished processing the site.

The theft occured when the tow truck carrying the Porsche was stopped at a red light on the night of Nov. 30, 2013, allowing Janow and Witty to run up to the truck and remove the roof panel from its bed. The driver of the tow truck noticed the theft and reported it to the authorities.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Janow and Witty could receive a sentence of six months in jail on misdemeanor charges of destroying evidence and resisting or delaying a police officer. Witty has pleaded no contest to grand theft, while Janow entered the same plea to charges of felony grand theft.

The authorities were able to quickly identify the suspects as there were a number of cars with eyewitnesses following the tow truck that was transporting the destroyed Porsche, and also because Witty had apparently posted photos of the Porsche parts from the crash on his Instagram account.
Walker and Rodas were killed while returning from a charity event in a business park in the Los Angeles area when their Carrera GT skidded off the road while traveling at approximately 93 mph, the authorities have determined. The final crash investigation ruled out the possibility that the pair were involved in a race with another car, citing unsafe driving as the cause of the accident that claimed the lives of both men. The investigation also determined that both perished almost instantly as the car left the road and struck a tree and a light pole, catching fire moments later. Thousands had turned out to mourn the deaths of Walker and Rodas several days later, setting up makeshift memorials near the crash site.
